How This Body Fat Calculator Works

The U.S. Navy circumference method estimates body fat from the relationship between your height and the circumference of your neck, waist, and (for women) hips. It was developed for quick field assessments and holds up surprisingly well against lab methods when measurements are taken carefully.

It is still an estimate. Use it to establish a starting point and track your trend month to month. For a precise reading - including muscle mass and where you carry it - get an InBody scan at any KlickWay location.

One thing we will never ask for here: your BMI. Fat loss while keeping muscle is the goal, and body fat percentage is the number that tracks it.

Body Fat Calculator FAQ

How accurate is the Navy tape-measure method?

Measured carefully, it is typically within 3 to 4 percentage points of lab methods - accurate enough to track your trend over time, which matters far more than any single reading.

Why not just use BMI?

BMI ignores body composition entirely - a muscular athlete and an untrained person can have the same BMI with completely different health and physiques. Body fat percentage distinguishes fat from muscle, which is what actually matters.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

Broad healthy ranges are roughly 10 to 20 percent for men and 18 to 28 percent for women. Athletes often sit lower. Context matters - the right target depends on your goals, training, and history.

How do I take the measurements correctly?

Neck: just below the larynx, tape sloping slightly down to the front. Waist: at the navel for men, at the narrowest point for women. Hips (women): at the widest point. Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin, and measure in the morning before eating.
